Voice Shift: microphone setup, effects and playback
Start with a clean input/output path, then test voice effects without feedback.
Prepare the audio path
Select the intended microphone and playback route in the operating system/app sound settings. A headset is preferable for the first test so processed sound does not feed back into the microphone. Check microphone permission for the actual application/host process and start at a low output level.
Start and test
- Open Voice Shift from its supported launcher and wait for the audio-engine status. Check the displayed microphone and playback device.
- If Start listening is disabled, read the engine/permission message instead of repeatedly clicking. Use Sound settings or Microphone access to address the actual problem.
- Start listening and speak normally. Inspect Mic input and Processed output meters separately.
- Use Hear original to compare the dry input with processed playback. Try the available voice/effect presets at moderate levels and save a custom voice only after checking it sounds as intended.
- Use Mute/stop controls to end monitoring before changing devices or leaving the station.
If permission is granted but audio stalls
Permission alone does not confirm a working device format or audio-engine connection. Record input/output device names, app version, macOS/OS version and the exact action that stalled. Distinguish a crash from a disabled button or an engine still preparing. Preserve a native crash report when the app exits.
Avoid feedback and false expectations
Local processed playback is not automatically the audio input for every broadcast or calling application. Verify the routing actually supported by the installed release. Do not raise speaker volume to fix a missing input; use meters and a headset to identify the failing side.
